A friend was given a promotion four months ago and was requested to being performing the responsibilities of the job by HR and others. The CEO has yet to sign off on the paperwork such that the implied pay increase can go into effect. Friend has continued to perform duties and responsibilities associated with the new job in good faith that the promotion will be official anyday. While this is certainly unethical and unprofessional, I'm wondering if there are there any laws that mandate back pay or protect my friend in the event CEO decides not to sign the paperwork.
