Do chiggers remain on the skin or fall off or just burrow in the skin?

They don't burrow. They attach themselves by a feeding tube. When you are irritated, you scratch and this dislodges them. Your immune system slowly neutralizes their injected fluid and the itch goes away. Topical anti itch medicines can help

You may also hear tales of these mites laying eggs under the skin to explain the hard bump that forms while the wound is healing. This is also a myth.

Preventing the mites from biting is fairly simple. Lawn/landscape maintenance and calf high socks when you're in brushy areas will reduce their ability to climb high enough to get to your skin.
